Today is All Soul’s Day, part of the three-day Day of the Dead celebration honoring ancestors in Mexican and Hispanic culture. I’m of German and Welsh ancestry and I can’t travel to the Philadelphia cemetery to adorn my father’s marker with marigolds or eat sweet treats with my siblings. But today I honor my father’s legacies of work ethnic, service, and a love of the cultures, art and artifacts of the world and thank him for his love and support. Thanks to all who have come before us, who have struggled and sacrificed so their children and grandchildren could have better lives. And most of all, thanks to the ancestors who, like my father, kept on learning and growing in love and courage right to the threshold of death and I’m sure, beyond. You are my heroes.
