When I lived in the Hudson Valley of New York, I watched a fascinating public access show on shamans and the artifacts they use in their work. No big surprise to me, being an artist, a shaman and a maker of state-shifting art and writing that shamans usually make their own healing tools. You “travel” to higher ground and bring back art supplies infused with courage, love and bliss.
One of my favorite writers shares these thoughts on the topic of art and transcendent experience:
“Art is not a handicraft. It is the transmission of feeling the artist has experienced.”
-Leo Tolstoy, from “War and Peace”
“Art is a microscope which the artist fixes on the secrets of his soul, and shows people these secrets which are common to us all.”
– Leo Tolstoy, from “What is Art?”
